I’m Dr. Joy, a licensed Psychologist and Breakup Coach based in Atlanta. I help amazing women like you gain clarity and confidence after breakups so that they can live, laugh, and love again! You may be wondering why I chose to specialize in helping women heal after breakups. Well for starters, I’m damn good at it. Secondly, over the years it seemed that breakups or things that were breakup adjacent (is that a thing? it is now) are what brought most of my clients into therapy. Even when the breakup was not recent or in their minds, particularly impactful, I found that many of the women I was seeing were still being affected by things from previous relationships. Whether they were holding out hope that things would work out with an ex or subconsciously fearful of making a commitment to the new guy, there seemed to be something about that last relationship that was keeping them stuck! It was a feeling I could relate to on a very personal level. Several years ago, I was also incredibly stuck after a breakup. I spent months hoping he would call, overanalyzing text messages, and feeling miserable. I am eternally grateful that I had my own therapist and coach at that time who helped me to wade through the murky waters and held me up until I could stand on my own again. I am honored that so many women have allowed me to walk with them on what can often be a very painful journey and consider it my life’s work to help women see themselves as the marvelous, fierce, and incredible creatures they were destined to be!
Because my passion for helping women heal from breakups is probably not enough to qualify me to do that work, you probably also want to know a little about my credentials. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Xavier University of Louisiana, a Master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from Arkansas State University, and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from The University of Georgia. I am active with the Georgia Psychological Association and serve on the Committee on the Psychology of Women and Girls in this organization. I am an avid reader and spend a significant amount of time engaging in professional development so that I am aware of new trends and research in the field. I can be pretty scholarly when I want to be but don’t worry, I’m not at all stuffy!
